Nonprofit marketing and development

Since 1984 Jan has worked extensively in development and marketing for nonprofit performing arts organizations, holding key positions as executive director and marketing/public relations director. As an arts administrator she forged numerous “business and art” partnerships that involved corporate sponsors in raising the curtain on operas, musicals, and concerts. With her journalism background, Jan developed an excellent rapport with print and broadcast media, placing countless feature stories and creating ongoing media sponsorships.

Publications specialist

Jan began her formal training in professional writing and editing while attending the graduate program at the
University of Missouri School of Journalism.

As a teaching assistant she taught graduate advanced editing and edited a number of doctoral dissertations for international students. While a grad student, she was a busy associate editor of INSEA News (International Society of Education through Art, a UNESCO-affiliate) published at the University of Missouri. She edited journal articles and abstracts by British, European, Australian, South American, and African scholars. In this work she was called on to “Americanize” the language of material drafted in British English.

For the medical publisher Mosby-Year Book (St. Louis and Philadelphia) and the academic publisher Peter Lang Group (New York), Jan edited books and collateral materials by international authors, many for whom English is a second language.

She has also edited and designed materials for such organizations as the American Psychological Association, the Missouri Wood Association, and the Missouri Bar Association. She enjoyed the position of assistant editor in public affairs at the Missouri Department of Conservation, where she worked on the award-winning Missouri Conservationist magazine. While in Mid-Missouri, she also held the position of publications manager for Stephens College.
